Stage Three begins by starting your baby’s day at 6:30 a.m., but making the night longer by going to bed at 11:00 p.m. Throughout the day, after the usual thirty-minute feeding, work on keeping your baby up a full hour and thirty minutes, then put her down for a nap. The only exception is after the 8:30 p.m. feeding, because you’re going to move her 10:00 p.m. nap to 9:30 p.m. Let baby sleep for one hour only, keep her awake until 11:00 p.m., feed her, and put her back to bed at 11:30 p.m.
The way to get your baby sleeping through the night is to make sure that your baby is consuming at least five to eight ounces at this 11:00 p.m. feeding. I recommend making that last feeding a bottle-feeding for a variety of reasons. First, this allows Dad to do a feeding, if he’s available, so that Mom can begin her night a little earlier. Second, by using a bottle you can accurately gauge exactly how much your baby has eaten before turning in for this large block of sleep time. Finally, if you’re supplementing with formula, those mixtures tend to be a little thicker than breast milk and therefore may keep your baby feeling satisfied longer, thus adding to the likelihood of making it through the night successfully.
